Basswood and cedar are the two most popular species used for wood plantation shutter models. Both softwoods produce oils that make them resistant to heat and moisture. Rather than absorbing water, the moisture rolls off the wood preventing cracking and distortions over time.

The three main types are Tier on Tier shutters, Café style shutters, and Full Height Shutters. Tier-on-Tier shutters offer the most versatility when it comes to light and privacy control.

PVC or vinyl shutters may be better for durability. However, wood shutters, especially those made from hardwoods like cedar or basswood, are also known for their strength and longevity. Composite shutters, constructed from a mixture of wood and synthetic materials, also offer excellent durability.
